Feeding Houseplants: A Gentle Routine with Kelp It Real

Most houseplants do not need much food, and the usual mistake is feeding too often, not too little. In our line, houseplants get Kelp It Real: 1/4 tsp per gallon of water, every 2-3 weeks. Incredible Bulk stays out of the pot. It is a late-flowering finishing booster built for bloom-stage crops, not for a pothos on a shelf.

What Houseplants Actually Need

Most houseplants grow slowly. They sit in a small volume of potting mix with limited light, and they do not use nutrients at the rate a garden tomato does. Three general points hold in most homes:

  • Fresh potting mix usually carries some nutrition for the first weeks to months, so a newly repotted plant rarely needs feeding right away.
  • Light sets the pace. A plant in a dim corner uses far less than the same plant in a bright window.
  • Salts build up in pots over time. A light, infrequent feed is easier on the roots than a strong one.

Why Kelp It Real for Houseplants

Kelp It Real is a cold-processed extract of Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed. It is a soluble powder with a 0-0-14 grade, so the guaranteed analysis is potash only. Do not count on it for nitrogen or phosphorus. What it brings is natural plant hormones (cytokinins, auxins, gibberellins), amino acids and micronutrients, along with help for stress such as transplant shock. It is the only OMRI-listed product in our line.

Kelp is a gentle supplement, not a complete NPK feed. It complements other feeds rather than replacing them. We do not publish a houseplant-specific nitrogen program, and we do not claim Kelp alone will carry a heavy-feeding foliage plant for years. For most casual houseplant growers, a light Kelp routine on top of decent potting mix is the point.

Routine by Season

The dose is 1/4 tsp per gallon, every 2-3 weeks. The seasonal adjustment is general horticulture, so treat it as a sensible default and adjust to your own light.

  • Spring-summer (longer days, active growth): 1/4 tsp per gallon, every 2-3 weeks.
  • Fall (light fading, growth slowing): stretch toward every 3 weeks, then taper.
  • Winter (low light, most plants near dormant): feed less, or pause until growth resumes.
  • Plants under grow lights (steady light all year): follow the spring-summer rhythm.

What to Do: A Kelp Routine, Step by Step

  1. Measure 1/4 tsp of Kelp It Real into 1 gallon of room-temperature water. Stir until fully dissolved.
  2. Water the pot as you normally would, using the Kelp water. Let the excess drain out of the bottom.
  3. Repeat every 2-3 weeks during active growth. Mark it on a calendar so you do not drift into weekly feeding.
  4. Cut back in fall and winter as light drops.
  5. Keep the Kelp sealed tight. It is hygroscopic and clumps if it takes on moisture, so use an airtight container.
  6. Make a smaller batch for a single pot. Keep the ratio the same and use the rest on other plants the same day.

You can also apply it as a foliar spray. Both foliar and soil application work, but a drench is simpler for most people indoors.

Optional Add-Ons

Microbes

Microbes works indoors at the same dose as everywhere else: 1-3 ml per gallon (roughly 1/4 to 3/4 tsp) per the feeding chart, as a drench at the base once a month. It has a mild earthy, fermented smell that is not offensive. Bagged potting mix generally starts with little living biology, and Microbes is how you add it.

The catch is the pairing. Microbes is built to run with a microbe food: Veg, Bloom, King Krustacean or Phishy. We do not point houseplant growers to any of those four, and we do not publish a houseplant pairing for Microbes. Do you need it for pots? No. For a simple routine, skip it and stay with Kelp It Real. If you do use it, a new pot or fresh repot is a fine time to start, with no waiting period.

Vitamin Sea

Vitamin Sea is a seawater-derived mineral concentrate with 95% reduced sodium. It is the lower-smell option indoors. The feeding chart lists 1 tsp per gallon, and it is used roughly monthly. It is a soil amendment, not a fertilizer, so do not expect NPK from it. Do not mix it with synthetic fertilizers. Apply it on its own, a few days apart from other feeds.

Phishy

Our fish hydrolysate, Phishy, smells like fish. It is fine outdoors. For indoor use, go with Vitamin Sea or Kelp It Real for similar benefits without the smell.

What Not to Use on Houseplants

  • Incredible Bulk. A high-phosphorus, high-potassium booster for the last weeks of flowering on bloom-stage crops. Houseplants do not need it. Keep it for flowering gardens.
  • King Krustacean. A chitin and calcium supplement for fruiting vegetables and berries. It is not for houseplants.
  • Veg and Bloom. The Feed step of our three-step program. They are built for the vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers in our feeding schedules and designed to run with Microbes. We steer houseplants to Kelp It Real instead, and we do not recommend Veg or Bloom as a houseplant routine.

Troubleshooting: Yellow Leaves, Legginess, Brown Tips

Yellowing lower leaves

Common causes are overwatering, low light, or old age of the leaf. Check the soil moisture first. Feeding more is rarely the fix, and extra feed on a waterlogged plant tends to make things worse. If new growth is yellow between the veins, a mineral gap is possible, and a light Vitamin Sea dose is one thing to try.

Leggy, stretched growth

This is almost always light. Fertilizer cannot replace sun. Move the plant closer to a window or add a grow light before changing the feed.

Brown leaf tips and crust on the soil

Often salt buildup or dry air. Flush the pot with plain water until it runs freely from the bottom, and skip the next feed.

Slow growth in winter

Slow growth in winter is normal. Hold off on feeding until new growth shows.

Where Growganica Fits

Start with Kelp It Real. It is the houseplant pick in our line, and it comes in 8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb and 20 lb sizes, so the smallest size lasts a long time for a few pots. Add Vitamin Sea if you want a low-smell mineral top-up. Microbes is optional, and because none of the foods it pairs with is a houseplant pick, we would skip it for a simple routine.

Skip the rest of the line for houseplants. If you also grow vegetables or flowering plants, those products are for them, not for the ficus, and the feeding schedule covers those crops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Incredible Bulk on houseplants?

No. Incredible Bulk is a high-phosphorus, high-potassium booster for the last weeks of flowering on bloom-stage crops. A pothos or a ficus does not need it. Houseplants get Kelp It Real in our line, and Incredible Bulk stays with the flowering crops it was built for.

How often and how much Kelp It Real?

The dose is 1/4 tsp per gallon of water, every 2-3 weeks during active growth. Stretch it toward every 3 weeks in fall, then feed less or pause in winter until new growth shows. Plants under grow lights can follow the spring-summer rhythm all year.

Do I need Microbes for pots?

No. Microbes works indoors at the same dose, but it is built to run with a microbe food, and we do not point houseplant growers to the foods it pairs with. We do not publish a houseplant pairing for it, so for a simple routine we skip it and stay with Kelp It Real.
