Fall Garden Feeding: Collards, Kale, Broccoli and Greens

Collards, kale, broccoli, cabbage and salad greens are grown for leaves, stems and heads. That is vegetative growth, so the Growganica products that fit are Microbes and Veg, with Kelp It Real as an add-on. Incredible Bulk is a late-bloom finisher, built for the last weeks of flowering, not for leafy crops. If you bought it for your fall garden, hold it for something that flowers and fruits.

What Leafy and Brassica Crops Want

These crops put their energy into foliage. Broccoli and cauliflower heads are technically clusters of flower buds, but you cut them before they open, so you are still feeding for growth, not for bloom.

In general horticulture, brassicas such as kale, collards, cabbage and broccoli are considered hungry crops, and nitrogen is the nutrient most tied to leaf growth. Salad greens grow fast and shallow, so they need steady, modest feeding rather than a big dose.

That is the job description for the vegetative side of the Growganica line:

  • Veg is the vegetative-stage powder. Its role is vegetative growth, from transplant through pre-flower.
  • Microbes is the foundation. Veg is a low-nitrogen formula that depends on soil biology to deliver the nitrogen, so it needs Microbes, or established living soil, to work as designed.
  • Kelp It Real is a seaweed extract. It is useful at every stage, including transplant and ahead of stress events.

Bloom and Incredible Bulk are flowering products. Bloom is the through-flowering feed and Bulk is the finisher layered on top. Neither belongs in a leafy-crop plan. King Krustacean is the other add-on you may have seen. Its docs focus on fruiting vegetables (tomatoes especially) and berries. We don't publish leafy-green guidance for it, so it isn't part of this plan.

A Fall Feeding Plan

Rates below come from the feeding chart and the product docs. One gallon of water is the unit.

  • Microbes: 1-3 ml per gallon (about 1/4 to 3/4 tsp), monthly. Foundation. Start at planting.
  • Veg: 1/4 tbsp per gallon as the base rate (the Veg doc lists a 1/4 to 1/2 tbsp range), about every 3-4 weeks. Main feed for leaf growth.
  • Kelp It Real: 1/4 tsp per gallon, every 2-3 weeks. Transplant recovery and stress support.

Mix in this order: water, then Microbes, then the Veg powder.

We don't publish a per-plant volume or a per-square-foot rate for these crops. Apply enough to wet the root zone, and don't pour more concentrate to make up for it.

What to Do

  1. Check your first-frost date. Look up your local average first-frost date and count back from it. Fall crops need time to size up before growth slows. Your county extension office can give you the date and the right planting window.
  2. Inoculate on planting day. Drench the bed or pot with Microbes the same day you transplant or sow. Don't wait for the bed to settle first. Microbes are what break the organic matter down, so waiting just delays the work.
  3. Feed after Microbes, not instead of them. Once transplants are in, start Veg at the base rate, mixed in the order above. Repeat about every 3-4 weeks while the crop is growing.
  4. Add Kelp at transplant. The Kelp doc lists transplant shock, chill and frost stress among the things it helps crops withstand. Use 1/4 tsp per gallon at transplant, then every 2-3 weeks. Foliar or soil both work.
  5. Stop adding as growth stalls. When your crop slows in cold weather, you have nothing left to feed for. Don't increase the dose to chase growth.
  6. Check your crop in the Feeding picker. If your plant is listed on the feeding schedule page, its schedule is worth a look next to this plan.

Does Fall Planting Need Different Feeding?

The products and the order stay the same. The pace changes.

Soil biology slows as soil cools, in most of the US. That is general horticulture, and it means a slower response to everything you add, including Veg. Plants also grow more slowly in short, cool days and take up less.

So hedge by region. In a warm-fall climate, such as the Gulf Coast, the South and the low desert, early fall plantings can still grow quickly and the plan above runs close to normal. In a colder region, expect a slower season and fewer feedings in total. Frequency, not dose, is what you adjust.

If growth looks pale and slow well before cold sets in, nitrogen may be the limit. We don't publish a higher Veg rate for greens, so stay at the base rate and keep Microbes going monthly, since the nitrogen comes through the biology.

If You Already Bought Incredible Bulk

You didn't waste it. It is just early.

Bulk is a high-phosphorus, high-potassium booster. Its doc says to use it in mid-to-late flowering, starting about 4-6 weeks before harvest, on top of Bloom, and not in the veg phase. Brassica leaves aren't that stage. What to do with it:

  • Save it for flowering and fruiting plants later, when you have plants heading into late flowering.
  • Use Veg and Microbes for the fall greens.
  • Don't try to find a "light" Bulk dose for kale. We don't publish a leafy-green rate for Bulk, and a made-up number is worse than none.

Where Growganica Fits

For fall greens, Microbes is Step 1 and Veg is Step 2 of the program. Kelp It Real is the optional add-on, and it is the only OMRI-listed product in the line.

Incredible Bulk and Bloom are flowering products, so they have no role in this crop plan. King Krustacean is left out too, because we don't publish leafy-green guidance for it. If your question is about a crop that flowers or fruits, ask again and the answer changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

I bought Incredible Bulk but planted fall greens; what should I use?

Use Microbes and Veg for the greens, with Kelp It Real as an add-on. Incredible Bulk is a late-bloom finisher, so hold it for flowering and fruiting plants later. We don't publish a leafy-green rate for Bulk, so there is no light dose to suggest for kale or collards.

How often should I feed leafy greens?

On this plan, Veg about every 3-4 weeks and Kelp It Real every 2-3 weeks, with Microbes monthly. Fast salad greens can finish in a few weeks, so they may only get one or two Veg feedings before harvest. That is fine.

Does fall planting need different feeding?

The products and the mix order stay the same. The pace changes. Soil biology slows as soil cools in most of the US, and plants take up less in short, cool days, so in a colder region expect fewer feedings in total. Adjust frequency, not dose.
