Kelp Seaweed Extract for Plants: What It Does and How to Use It

Soluble kelp extract is the most misunderstood additive in the grow room, and it is not fertilizer in the usual sense. It is a small-dose product made from the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum, and it carries natural plant hormones and amino acids rather than a meaningful amount of N-P-K. Mix a small amount into water every few weeks, apply it as a foliar spray or a soil drench, and keep feeding your plants as usual, since it sits on top of your regular feed.

What Soluble Kelp Extract Is

Ascophyllum nodosum is a brown seaweed harvested from cold North Atlantic shorelines. Processors extract it and dry the extract into a dark-brown powder that dissolves in water. That is all "soluble kelp" means: you can mix it into a watering can or sprayer without leftover chunks.

Kelp meal is a different product. That is the coarse ground seaweed sold for mixing into soil. A soluble extract is made to go into water, then onto leaves or roots in small amounts.

The extract contains plant hormones, amino acids and a range of micronutrients. Three groups of hormones get most of the attention.

Hormone group What plants use it for (general horticulture)
Cytokinins Cell division, root branching, side shoots
Auxins Root elongation, flower set
Gibberellins Stem elongation, flowering signals

Signals, Not Food

Fertilizer supplies building blocks: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and the rest. Hormones are signals. They do not feed a plant. They nudge how the plant spends what it already has.

That is why the grade on a kelp extract looks odd next to a regular fertilizer. Kelp It Real is graded 0-0-14. The analysis on the label is soluble potash (K2O) 14% and nothing else, with no nitrogen and no phosphorus listed. At a dose of a quarter teaspoon per gallon, the potassium it adds is small.

If you came here from the big-box aisle where every bottle promises a miracle, this is the opposite pitch. Kelp is a small, specific tool, and it works best on top of a feed that is already doing its job.

What Kelp Can and Cannot Do

Based on how growers use it, kelp can:

  • Support root development at transplant and in veg.
  • Help plants cope with heat, chill, drought or transplant stress when used before or during the stress.
  • Support flower and fruit set during flowering.

What it does not do:

  • It does not replace nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium feeding. The plant still needs those from your regular feed.
  • It does not fix a nutrient problem, a watering problem or a light problem.
  • It does not guarantee yield, and we make no promise that it will protect a plant from frost or drought. Results vary with the plant, the conditions and the timing.

If a plant is yellowing or stalling and you reach for kelp first, you are treating the wrong thing. Sort out the feed, the water and the light, then add kelp on top.

Dose and Application

The Growganica feeding chart is the source of truth for dosage. It lists Kelp It Real at ¼ tsp per gallon.

Item Rate
Base dose ¼ tsp per gallon of water
Frequency Every 2 to 3 weeks
Method Foliar spray or soil drench
Stage Transplant, veg and flower

How far a container goes: the Kelp It Real product data lists 25 feedings per ounce, about 400 feedings per pound at the ¼ tsp dose. One feeding is one gallon of mix. Calculate from the net amount on the label (8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb or 20 lb), not from shipping weight.

For commercial acreage, the manufacturer lists a foliar rate of 400 g per acre and a root or drip rate of 900 g per acre. Home growers should use the per-gallon chart dose.

What to Do: Kelp Step by Step

  1. Start at transplant. Add kelp to the water you use when you move a plant into its new home, then give it a normal watering schedule afterward.
  2. Measure small. Level ¼ tsp into a gallon of room-temperature water.
  3. Dissolve it fully before anything else goes in. If you add a wetting agent or surfactant, add it only after the kelp has completely dissolved.
  4. Mix calcium products separately. Pre-mix any calcium product separately from the kelp, then combine the two solutions.
  5. Choose foliar or drench. Foliar means spraying leaves, ideally in the cool part of the day. Drench means pouring the mix onto the soil at the base of the plant. If a plant looks stressed, foliar is the faster route. Growers typically see a response within 24 to 48 hours on stressed plants, a typical result, not a guarantee.
  6. Repeat every 2 to 3 weeks through veg and flower.
  7. Keep the bag sealed. The powder is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture from the air. Store it in an airtight container or it clumps.
  8. Keep feeding. Continue your regular N-P-K feed. If you use Growganica Veg or Bloom, keep Microbes in the program, as those formulas are designed to work with them.

Houseplants are a good fit for kelp. A houseplant on a 2 to 3 week kelp schedule is a simple, low-risk routine alongside its normal feeding.

Where Growganica Fits

Kelp It Real is our soluble Ascophyllum nodosum extract, sold in 8 oz, 1 lb, 5 lb and 20 lb sizes.

  • Grade: 0-0-14, soluble potash (K2O) 14% only.
  • Certification: Kelp It Real is OMRI Listed.
  • Derived from: cold-processed Ascophyllum nodosum, made for us by a white-label manufacturer.
  • Where it sits in the program: it is a Step 3 "Power Up" product. Microbes (Step 1) and Veg or Bloom (Step 2) come first. Kelp is an addition to that base. The full method is in The System.

If you only want one additive on top of a regular feed, kelp is a sensible starting point. If your main problem is a nutrient shortfall, kelp will not solve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I apply kelp as a foliar spray or a drench?

Both work. Foliar, spraying the leaves, tends to show the fastest response on stressed plants, typically within 24 to 48 hours, a typical result, not a guarantee. A drench, pouring the mix onto the soil at the base of the plant, is the easy option when nothing looks stressed. Spray in the cool part of the day.

How often and how much kelp should I use?

On the Growganica feeding chart, the dose is ¼ tsp per gallon of water every 2 to 3 weeks, through transplant, veg and flower. The chart is the source of truth. Home growers should use the per-gallon dose, not the commercial acreage rates.

Is kelp extract organic?

Yes. Kelp It Real is OMRI Listed.

Does kelp replace my regular feed?

No. Kelp is graded 0-0-14 and carries hormones and amino acids, not meaningful nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium. Your plants still need those from your regular feed.
