Keep powders sealed and dry. Keep liquids capped, shaded and out of the heat. Keep every product away from food, children and pets. That covers most of it, and the rest is knowing which products ask for a little extra care.
How Long Does Fertilizer Last?
Our product documents give no expiry date, shelf-life figure or "best before" date for any Growganica product, so this guide doesn't give one. We would rather say that than guess. They do hold a few storage and handling rules for four products:
- Kelp It Real (soluble powder). Hygroscopic: keep it airtight or it clumps.
- Microbes (liquid). Store below 100°F, out of direct sun. Use within the recommended window. Smell is mild, earthy and fermented.
- Phishy (liquid, formerly SeaPhood). Oil separation is normal. Agitate (shake or stir) before drawing. It smells like fish.
- King Krustacean (powder). Label caution: may cause intestinal distress if swallowed. Its smell is limited next to Phishy.
Powders
Powders mostly go wrong one way: they take on water. A bag left open, a damp scoop, or a shed that swings between hot days and cool, damp nights is usually enough to start lumps.
Kelp It Real is the one to watch. Our Kelp document calls it hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture out of the air. The handling note says to keep it in airtight containers or it clumps. Only the Kelp document carries that note.
Our documents don't say whether a clumped bag works any less well, so we make no claim either way. What lumps do change is your measuring. The feeding chart sets doses by the teaspoon or tablespoon, and a spoonful of lumps isn't a spoonful of powder. Break the lumps up before you measure, then dissolve the powder fully in the water.
The other powders, King Krustacean included, have no separate storage rule in our documents. Any fine powder can cake when it gets damp, so give them the same care. We publish no temperature limit for a powder, so a cool, dry, shaded spot is the safe default.
Liquids
Microbes
Our product notes describe Microbes as a living soil inoculant, a product that adds soil biology. Living things don't do well in heat or hard sun, which is the usual reason for a rule like this one. The rule: store it below 100°F, out of direct sun. In summer a closed shed, a garage, a parked car and a sunny windowsill can all pass 100°F, so a shelf indoors is the easier choice.
The notes also call it shelf-stable, with one condition: use it within the recommended window for the best viability. That window isn't in our documents, so we can't hand you a number and won't guess at one. The notes describe the smell as mild, earthy and fermented, not offensive.
Phishy
Phishy is fish hydrolysate, and it smells like fish. Our notes call that manageable outdoors and suggest Kelp It Real or Vitamin Sea for indoor use instead. Oil separation is the other surprise, and it is normal. Agitate the bottle before you draw each dose, so the oil is mixed back in.
To keep the smell down in storage, keep the cap on tight and the bottle somewhere you don't mind a fish smell, such as a shaded shed or garage shelf. Heat tends to make smells stronger, so the cooler the spot, the better. Fish-based products can also attract animals, so keep the bottle out of reach.
Freezing and mixing
We publish no freeze guidance for any liquid, so don't leave one in an unheated garage through a hard freeze. Mixed feed is a separate matter. King Krustacean's spec says not to hold it in a mix with Microbes for more than 4 hours unless you aerate it, because the microbe population crashes. That is a limit for a mixed batch, not a shelf life.
Safety Habits
King Krustacean is made from crustacean meal. Its label caution reads: may cause intestinal distress if swallowed. Store it out of reach of children and pets, as you would any garden product. Read the label on every product before you open it.
We make no pet or child safety claim for any Growganica product, and this guide doesn't either. These habits are plain garden-shed sense:
- Keep products in a closed cabinet or on a high shelf, out of reach of children and pets.
- Keep them away from food, drink and animal feed. Never pour a product into a food or drink bottle.
- Label any container you pour into, and keep the original label or a photo of it. It carries the grade, the derived-from list and any cautions.
- Scoop slowly to keep dust down, close the bag straight away and wash your hands afterward.
- Don't leave open buckets or watering cans of mixed feed where a child or a pet can reach them.
This guide gives no health advice. If someone swallows a product, or you're worried about a reaction, contact a doctor, your vet or poison control.
What to Do
- Pick the spot. Cool, dry and shaded, on a shelf rather than a concrete floor, away from food and out of reach. For Microbes, it has to stay below 100°F.
- Seal the powders. If the bag has a seal, squeeze out the air and press it shut. If it doesn't, or it won't close fully, move the powder to a jar or tub with a tight lid. Start with Kelp It Real.
- Keep the scoop dry. Don't dip a wet spoon into a bag, and never tip damp or mixed product back into the container.
- Cap the liquids. Wipe the threads, tighten the cap and stand the bottle upright. Shake Phishy before each use.
- Write the date on it. We publish no expiry, so a date you wrote yourself is your best record. Use the oldest container first.
- Check before you use it. Powder should scoop loose and dry. Liquids should smell like the descriptions above. If something looks or smells wrong in a way you can't explain, message us before you use it.
- Mix what you will use. If King Krustacean is in a mix with Microbes, use the batch within 4 hours or aerate it.
Where Growganica Fits
Storage doesn't call for a product, so nothing here needs buying. What we can tell you is which of ours ask for care. Kelp It Real wants dry air. Microbes wants a shaded shelf that stays under 100°F. Phishy wants a tight cap and a spot where you don't mind the smell. King Krustacean carries a label caution.
Microbes is always applied with a microbe food (Veg, Bloom, King Krustacean or Phishy), so plan the two together. If your question isn't answered here, ask us. Where we don't have the figure, we'll say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does fertilizer last?
Our product documents give no expiry date, shelf-life figure or "best before" date for any Growganica product, so we don't publish one. A date you write on the container yourself is your best record. Use the oldest container first.
Why did my powder clump?
Powders take on water. An open bag, a damp scoop, or a shed that swings between hot days and cool, damp nights is usually enough. Kelp It Real is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture from the air, so keep it airtight. Break lumps up before you measure, then dissolve the powder fully in the water.
Where do I store Microbes?
Below 100°F and out of direct sun. A closed shed, a garage, a parked car and a sunny windowsill can all pass 100°F, so a shelf indoors is the easier choice.
Is the oil separation in my Phishy normal?
Yes. Oil separation is normal for Phishy. Agitate the bottle, by shaking or stirring, before you draw each dose so the oil is mixed back in.
How should I keep fertilizer away from children and pets?
Keep products in a closed cabinet or on a high shelf, away from food, drink and animal feed. We make no pet or child safety claim for any Growganica product. If someone swallows a product, or you're worried about a reaction, contact a doctor, your vet or poison control.
