Most feeding programs hand you a shelf of bottles and a vague sense of guilt. This one is simpler. Three steps, three core products, a handful of optional boosters, and a clear answer to what you can skip. Here is what to buy first, what order it goes in, and which add-ons are not worth your money yet.
The short version: three steps, three core products
The program runs on Microbes, Veg, and Bloom. That is the core. Everything else is optional and additive. Veg and Bloom are written to work with Microbes, so the three belong together.
- Step 1, Inoculate: Microbes.
- Step 2, Feed: Veg for the growing stage, then Bloom for the flowering and fruiting stage.
- Step 3, Power Up: Kelp It Real, Phishy, Vitamin Sea, King Krustacean. Pick only what you need.
- Finisher, late flowering only: Incredible Bulk.
You can run the program with no Step 3 products at all. If you want the longer story behind the method, start with the 3-step living soil system.
Step 1: Inoculate with Microbes
Microbes is a liquid that adds soil life to your bed or pot. It is a biological product, not a nutrient source, which is why its label grade reads 0.01-0-0. It has no nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium story to tell, and it is not trying to.
The reason it comes first has to do with Veg. Veg is intentionally low in nitrogen. Its grade is 0.5-0-3. It is designed to feed soil biology, and that biology supplies the rest of the nitrogen plants use. In sterile bagged potting mix there is very little of that biology to start with, so Veg under-delivers without it. Established, healthy garden soil may already have some, but you cannot easily tell from the outside. Pairing with Microbes removes the guesswork.
Bloom follows the same pairing rule. It comes from how the program is designed: Bloom is written to be used with Microbes, and we do not recommend running it without.
Start Microbes on day one. That means the same day you fill a new bed or pot, or set a transplant. Do not wait for compost or mulch to settle first. Soil life is what breaks that material down, so waiting only delays the work.
Step 2: Feed with Veg, then Bloom
Veg and Bloom are powders you mix into water. Use Veg from transplant through the growing stage. Switch to Bloom when the plant moves into flowering or fruiting. For a tomato, that is roughly when flower clusters start to form. For a flowering ornamental, it is when buds appear. Timing varies by crop and variety, so go by the plant, not the calendar.
Mix order
When you mix a feed, the order is water, then Microbes, then the powder. Add Microbes before Veg, not after. Bloom follows the same order.
Doses
Doses live in the feeding chart and on each label. We do not derive dose from bag weight, and the exact figure differs by product. For crop-by-crop schedules, use the feeding schedule page.
Step 3: Power Up, pick what you need
Step 3 products are boosters. Each one does a specific job, and none replaces Veg or Bloom. Here is an honest read on who each one suits.
- Kelp It Real is a soluble seaweed extract powder. Best for nearly everyone: veg, flowering, transplants, houseplants. Skip it if you want the simplest possible program.
- Phishy is a cold-processed fish hydrolysate, a liquid. Best for outdoor beds and gardens where smell is not an issue. Skip it if you grow indoors or are sensitive to fish smell. It does smell like fish.
- Vitamin Sea is a concentrated seawater extract with magnesium and trace minerals. Best for growers who want to cover micronutrients. Skip it if your plants look fine. Dilute it as directed and apply it on its own.
- King Krustacean is a crab-shell chitin and calcium powder. Best for fruiting vegetables, especially tomatoes, plus fruits and berries. Skip it if you grow houseplants, lawn, or flowers. It is made for fruiting veg only.
Two practical cautions. Phishy and Vitamin Sea both carry mixing notes: Phishy should not be mixed with other mineral fertilizers, and Vitamin Sea is applied on its own, a few days apart from your other feeds. Read the label before you mix. Kelp It Real attracts moisture, so keep the container sealed.
Of the eight products in the line, only Kelp It Real is OMRI listed, and it is the only one we call organic. Several of the others do not follow the usual high-number fertilizer logic, which is why some labels read as zeros. Dose from the feeding chart, not from the grade.
The finisher: Incredible Bulk
Incredible Bulk is not a Step 3 booster. It is a late-flowering finisher, used in roughly the last 4 to 6 weeks of flowering, on top of Bloom and Microbes, not instead of them. It is for flowering plants only. We do not publish Incredible Bulk guidance for fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes. It is not for houseplants either; use Kelp It Real there.
What to do: first-week checklist
- Day one: buy or confirm you have Microbes, Veg, and Bloom.
- Day one: apply Microbes to the new bed, pot, or transplant. Same day, before any feeding.
- First feed: mix water, then Microbes, then Veg. Follow the feeding chart dose for your crop.
- Skip Step 3 for now unless you have a clear reason. Add one booster at a time so you can see what it does.
- When flowers or fruit start: switch from Veg to Bloom.
- Late flowering only: if you grow flowering plants, consider Incredible Bulk for the final 4 to 6 weeks of flowering.
Where Growganica fits (what to skip)
Honest version, so you spend only on what you need.
- Need to buy: Microbes, Veg, Bloom.
- Easy first add, if any: Kelp It Real. It suits more crops than any other booster.
- Skip Phishy if you grow indoors or do not want the smell.
- Skip King Krustacean unless you grow fruiting vegetables, fruits, or berries.
- Skip Vitamin Sea if your plants look healthy and you are not chasing micronutrient gaps.
- Skip Incredible Bulk unless you are growing a flowering plant through to a late-flowering finish. We do not publish guidance for fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes.
- Houseplants: Microbes plus Kelp It Real is the simple route. Do not use Incredible Bulk.
Not every plant needs every product. If you are unsure, start with the core three and add from there. The full lineup is on the system page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which products do I start with?
Start with three: Microbes, Veg, and Bloom. That is the core of the program, and everything else is optional. Veg and Bloom are written to work with Microbes, so buy them together. You can run the whole program without a single Step 3 product.
What order do the products go in?
In the pitcher or tank, the order is water, then Microbes, then the powder. Add Microbes before Veg, not after. Bloom follows the same order. Across the season, Microbes goes in on day one, Veg runs from transplant through the growing stage, and Bloom takes over when flowers or fruit start.
Do I need all of them?
No. The core three are the only products you need to buy. Step 3 products are boosters that each do one job and none of them replaces Veg or Bloom. If you are unsure, start with the core three and add from there, one booster at a time.
Can I use Veg or Bloom without Microbes?
We do not recommend it. Veg is intentionally low in nitrogen and relies on soil biology to supply the rest, and sterile bagged potting mix has very little of that biology to start with. Bloom follows the same pairing rule, and it is written to be used with Microbes.
